In pregnancy your ligaments
loosen, your belly swells and becomes taut,
and your body prepares to feed externally the life you are so
effortlessly nourishing internally. You, too, are undergoing massive
transformation from singular to plural, from daughter to mother, from
simply living to being the giver of life. Climb inside this beautiful
(and sometimes terrifying!) new body and let it move and swirl and
undulate around the miracle of life inside you. Discover the movements
that feel so right during the growth of your baby and in the birth
Enjoy the journey!
Disc 1 offers a
45 minute warm-up that includes positions useful during labor, pelvic floor
exercises, and targeted stretching.
Following the warm-up are 6 dance chapters that teach specific movements
and their uses during labor. Maha’s
instruction is clear and gentle, the music is beautiful and meditative, and the
reminders to center and connect with both baby and self are a wonderful aid in
relaxing and releasing tension. Women
who experience back pain during pregnancy report that practicing the belly
dance movements alleviates that pain more quickly and thoroughly than anything
else they have tried.
Disc 2 includes a
beautifully filmed 50-minute documentary
of Maha’s homebirth at the age of 46, demonstrating belly dance in practice
during labor. Two midwives discuss the benefits of these techniques
with Maha for both mother and baby’s wellbeing.
This unique film offers not only an understanding of how to use belly
dance to aid labor, but the encouragement of seeing a homebirth unfolding so
naturally, safely, and with grace and strength.
An excellent addition on its own to any birthing library!
Here is what birth professionals around the world are saying
about “Dance of the Womb”:
Maha, Your belly dance book and DVD are simply wonderful. I have
mentioned them in the revised edition of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, which will be released in June
2010. You have done the world a huge service with this work. And the
production values on the DVD are outstanding!" - Christiane Northrup, MD
gentle rhythmical movements shown by Maha can enhance muscle strength and
flexibility, helping a woman to align her baby in her pelvis and
encouraging pelvic muscle relaxation and blood flow. The active and
passive components of the gentle dances help pelvic floor toning, which
assists in the birthing process and reduces injury. As well, the
confidence gained using these natural calming movements enhances self
esteem and respect and love of our bodies as well as increased joy in
birthing, our babies, and our femininity.” - Debbie Mortimer, MD,
of the Womb" relaxes your mind. A relaxed mind can embrace change, deal
with pain, open to new states and mostly surrender. Pregnancy, birth and
motherhood are all about surrender. When we surrender we open a space for
something new to happen. When you let go of stress there is a space for
something to flow in......peace." Angela Fitzgerald, Mother
and Doula, Australia
