Benefits of babywearing

Emotional Benefits
  • Babies cry less and are healthier - Studies have shown that babies that are held more, cry less.(1) One study found that leaving babies to cry for long periods of time alters their nervous system by flooding the developing brain with stress hormones and adrenalin.(2)

  • Carried babies are calm and content - Wearing your baby in a wrap sling, a baby will feel reassured by the presence of their mother's body rhythms. The familiarity of her heartbeat, body temperature, body smell and breathing patterns will create a smooth transition from womb to world. A randomised controlled test reported in Pediatrics showed that carrying babies reduces crying and fussiness 43% during the day and 51% at night. (3)
Cognitive Benefits
  • Carried babies are primed for learning - Carrying a baby promotes cognitive development and speech development, since babies are exposed to more experiences and conversations.
Physiological Benefits
  • Babywearing stimulates a baby's physical development -Touching your baby stimulates her growth hormone production.(4)

  • Babywearing stimulates a baby's vestibular system, the parts of the inner ear that control the body's sense of balance.

  • Babywearing increases a baby's circulation and promotes respiration.(5)

  • Babywearing promotes deeper, longer and more peaceful sleep cycles, vital for brain maturation.

  • Babywearing helps digestion and eases colic - wearing your baby in a wrap sling offers an upright position which promotes digestion. A baby's tummy is massaged through the act of babywearing which also promotes bowel movement. The acupressure points that aid digestion and sleep, are located on the belly and on the lower insides of the thighs. These points are automatically massaged through babywearing.(6)

FAQ Hana Baby Wrap
  1. If bamboo is such a great fabric, why is the Hana Baby Wrap made of bamboo blended with organic cotton?
Blending organic cotton into bamboo fabric makes the fabric more stable than 100% bamboo, which is an important characteristic for a baby carrier. Our baby wrap is made of 68% bamboo, 28% organic cotton and 4% elastane, still maintaining all the characteristics of bamboo fabric, while adding the stability of cotton to it.

  2. Can bamboo fabric be machine washed and tumble dried?
Yes, we recommend washing it on 40 degrees Celcius. Tumble dry low. Wash separately before use.

  3. How is it possible that the Hana Baby Wrap is thinner and cooler than - yet as supportive as a regular cotton-elastane wrap?
Bamboo fabric has a higher tensile strength than cotton and is therefore stronger than cotton.

  4. What makes the Hana Baby Wrap more comfortable than other slings and baby carriers?
Hana Baby Wrap's design and material both contribute to its comfort. Your baby's weight is evenly distributed over the whole back and shoulders, in contrast to many other baby carriers that have thin straps that dig into the shoulders. Bamboo fabric is more breathable and absorbent than cotton, making it very comfortable to wear.

  5. Is my newborn too small for the the Hana Baby Wrap?
No, no newborn, or even a premature baby is too small for Hana Baby Wrap. In fact, it is ideal for the very little ones as it holds them close and snug to the wearer, while it ensures correct support. Since no newborn is too small, Hana Baby Wrap is also ideal to use for 'Kangaroo Care'.

  6. Is the Hana Baby Wrap suitable for 'Kangaroo Care'?
Yes, it is. Hana Baby Wrap is a great way to carry your premature baby skin to skin. Simply use our sling to wrap your baby against your bare chest, while he or she is wearing a nappy only. Keep your baby warm with an additional blanked if necessary.

  7. Can I breastfeed discreetly with the Hana Baby Wrap?
Yes, breastfeeding discreetly with our wrap sling is easy, just hold your baby in your arms, and slide the head underneath one of the X-straps while feeding.

  8. It looks very complicated to use. Will I master tying it?
Some may need to practice tying the wrap a couple of times, say 2 or 3 times, but it becomes second nature pretty quickly, just like tying a shoe lace.

  9. How does the Hana Baby Wrap differ from other wrap carriers on the market?
Although other wrap carriers are similar in design, the main difference is the material. Most wrap carriers are made of cotton, either with or without elastane. Hana Baby Wrap is made of bamboo fabric blended with organic cotton and a touch of elastane. Having bamboo fabric as the main player,Hana Baby Wrap is much more breathable, cooler and softer than regular cotton wrap carriers, making it more comfortable. Other advantages of bamboo are that
    - it is naturally antibacterial, whereas bacteria readily grow in cotton
    - it is hypoallergenic
    - it has a natural UV filter
    - it is one of the most sustainable fabrics available, and therefore all our wraps are sustainable.

  10. Are the fabric and dyes used toxin free?
Yes, all the fabric and dyes are toxin free and baby safe.

T.I.C.K.S. sling safety guidelines
Your wrap should be tight enough to hug your baby close to you as this will be most comfortable for you both. Any slack/loose fabric will allow your baby to slump down in the carrier which can hinder their breathing and pull on your back.

In view at all times.
You should always be able to see your baby's face by simply glancing down - make sure there is no fabric covering your child's face.

Close enough to kiss
Your baby's head should be as close to your chin as is comfortable. By tipping your head forward you should be able to kiss your baby on the head or forehead.

Keep chin off the chest.
Your baby should never be curled so their chin is forced onto their chest as this can restrict their breathing. Check you can get a finger under their chin (reach in from the side of the sling if you need to).

Supported back.
The wrap should support your baby's back - and his tummy and chest should be against you. If you put your hand on your baby's back and press gently s/he should not uncurl.
