Amniotic fluid indicator swabs. Amnicators® are a rapid, simple way to test for ruptured amniotic membranes. They are sterile, individually wrapped swabs with a pH sensitive indicator tip. By means of a simple color change one can detect the presence of amniotic fluid. With normal vaginal pH level at term somewhere between 4.5-6.0, the tip will turn yellow. When amniotic fluid is present and pH level has risen, the tip will turn blue and show that the pH level is 6.5 or above. Tests can be stored at room temperature for an average of 2 years. This is a non-invasive, non-threatening way to accurately test for the presence of amniotic fluid.

These are easier to use and more cost effective than nitrazine. Can be left with client to use at home just-in-case. We know many fluids can give a positive result, but if it's a clear fluid without blood in it, the test is pretty reliable. There is a known false positive and false negative rate with ANY method of testing for amniotic fluid, so this little tool must be used along with clinical judgement of the whole picture.

When a fern test isn't reasonable for any number of reasons, I strongly prefer these swabs to nitrazine paper. Much easier for clients to use themselves.
